Why You Need an Oil Change
Oil is a necessary fluid for your vehicle. It allows the engine to operate more efficiently and with less wear and tear. The oil circulates through the engine to lubricate the moving components. Because everything works smoother, the engine doesn’t run as hot, which helps it last longer.
The oil also removes grime that gets in the engine and can cause damage. The oil filter traps much of this dirt to protect the engine. As the oil gets dirty and wears down and the filter gets clogged, it’s less effective. A new filter and new oil are needed to keep the process working.
How Often to Have an Oil Change
Older vehicles that use traditional motor oil need to have the oil changed about every 3000 miles. Newer models use synthetic oil, which only needs to be changed every 5000-7500 miles or less. Some vehicles can even go 10,000 miles between oil changes.
If you don’t drive that much, you still need to have the oil changed at least twice a year. You can check the color of the oil on the dipstick if you don’t remember when you had your last oil change. If it’s dark or black, the oil needs to be replaced.
How to Tell When the Oil Needs to Be Changed
When you have your oil changed at Platinum Hyundai of Tracy or most service centers, the technician will put a sticker on the windshield to tell you when your next oil change should be. If you don’t have that sticker, the dashboard oil light may also come on to let you know it’s time for an appointment.
If your vehicle is sluggish getting started or picking up speed, it may mean you need an oil change. You can also check the dipstick and see the color of the oil. You should check the oil level occasionally even if the light doesn’t come on.
If you notice an oil leak, bring your vehicle in for service even if it’s not time for an oil change. An oil leak often gets worse and can cause damage to the engine in time.
